Tips for Photographing Food

Formerly based in Nashville, Heidi Jewell is also a photographer of food, fashion, architecture, interior design, and more.

With the advent of smartphones and Instagram, photographing food has become a daily ritual for many. However, there are ways to make food photos really pop, according to BBC Good Food. First, try to avoid using flash, as the light will flatten the dish and eliminate natural shadows that add to the composition. It is a good idea to use a tripod in order to avoid the blurriness that comes from shaky hands.

When composing the shot, carefully select props that will contribute to the photo--everything should be thoughtfully placed. Be sure to try different angles and determine which is the best and if you feel like the composition isn’t working, it’s a good time to rearrange or start over. Finally, don’t let the food sit around too long and don’t be afraid to add misty bursts of water to give food a more vibrant appearance.

Tips to Be a Stronger Hiker

The former Nashville editor for Nylon magazine, Heidi Jewell was responsible for covering the city’s daily activities. Now residing in Denver, she manages client relationships, digital efforts, and performs various additional duties as an account manager for VOCO Creative. Aside from fulfilling her professional obligations, Heidi Jewell enjoys an array of hobbies, including hiking in the vicinity of Denver and beyond.

There are several tips to bear in mind if you want to become a stronger hiker. Take trail mix, as it is vital to keep your hard-working muscles enriched with nutrients. Bringing a lunch is insufficient; you need trail mix to keep you functioning at an optimal level.

Aside from nutrition, it’s beneficial to avoid wearing cotton while hiking. Instead, you should take advantage of wicking layer technology. Wicking means that sweat will be moved away from your body, through the layers. Cotton, by contrast, will absorb your sweat.

How to Improve Your Food Photography

As an account manager at VOCO Creative in Denver, Heidi Jewell manages digital efforts, while helping to create and execute on social media campaigns. Formerly a producer for Nashville Public Television, Heidi Jewell also hosted a five-episode series for the network. During her leisure time in Denver, she enjoys multiple hobbies, including photography.

Although food photography can be more challenging than other types of photography, improvement can be achieved by applying various techniques. Knowing your angle is the first step. There may seem to be only a few angles when it comes to food, but it’s crucial to get the most precise angle prior to capturing the photo. You will need to think of the food along with its height, shape, and size. Once you find the quality of the food, that should be your angle.

If you are trying to shoot a photo of the front side of food, it’s an advantage to have a background and foreground. Try to fill in the empty spaces with some ingredients from the main dish to allow a story to be told within the picture.
