How to Improve Your Food Photography

Formerly a producer for Nashville Public Television, Heidi Jewell also hosted a five-episode series for the network. During her leisure time in Denver, she enjoys multiple hobbies, including photography.

Although food photography can be more challenging than other types of photography, improvement can be achieved by applying various techniques. Knowing your angle is the first step. There may seem to be only a few angles when it comes to food, but it’s crucial to get the most precise angle prior to capturing the photo. You will need to think of the food along with its height, shape, and size. Once you find the quality of the food, that should be your angle.

If you are trying to shoot a photo of the front side of food, it’s an advantage to have a background and foreground. Try to fill in the empty spaces with some ingredients from the main dish to allow a story to be told within the picture.
